What are Surgical (Medical) Face Masks?

Although the face masks were commonly used in hospital since modern medicine, after the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve become an important device in people’s life for protection from SARS-COV-2 virus. A face mask is a textile material that covers the nose and mouth. A surgical face mask is a barrier between the mouth and the nose of the wearers and the possible contamination coming from the immediate environment.

Types of Medical Face Masks

We can distinguish couple types of medical face masks according to the intention of using them.

Surgical Face Masks

Surgical face masks are the masks that we commonly use since the debut of the pandemic and before they were used especially in hospital during the surgeries and such. As we’ve said a surgical mask is a disposable device that helps to protect wearer from the contamination coming from the immediate environment. Surgical masks are made in different thicknesses, such as 3 ply or 5 ply, which determines the level of protection. But it should be worn properly so that it can serve as a protection. If we wear it properly (it should fit and cover both the nose and the mouth) , a surgical mask serve to block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or splatter that may contain germs, such as viruses and/or bacteria. It should be noted that a surgical mask is intended to be wore only for once. It should be replaced if damaged or soiled, or if breathing becomes difficult.

FFP 2 Mask Without Valve

FFP 2 Mask, or N95 Respirators, is a respiratory device that offers a very efficient filtration of airborne particles. Although it is generally used in construction sites and other industrial type jobs that expose workers to dust and small particles, FFP 2 Mask has become common in stopping the transmission of COVID-19 since it provides a better protection against small particles. It is harder to breath for the wearer than a surgical mask, but it offers a much better protection against COVID-19.
